A message from the Superintendent about a student safety issue

Dear Viking community.

This morning we had a security alert: a student left our campus without signing out of school according to our normal sign-out procedures. In the world we live in today, we can no longer assume that students will be “OK” in situations like this, or that it's okay to simply let a situation play out. In keeping with our mandate to ensure safety first, we contacted law enforcement to help locate the missing student.

Within a short period of time law enforcement determined the student was in a safe place. As you can imagine, this information was a huge relief for everyone involved.

As much as it would have been easier to assume that the student was safe without looking more closely and enlisting professional assistance, that is not how we do business in our school district. Student safety is our first priority, and all procedures established to preserve the safety of our students must be followed at all times. Consistent policy and careful practice of the rules we set in place are important to ensure that at OV, all students are safe and accounted for.

The speed at which our staff acted today gives me confidence in the safety of our school. I appreciate their diligence and professionalism in working together so well.

Any further discussion about school safety is welcome any time. Feel free to make an appointment through Mrs. Gail Burpee, OV's district secretary, to schedule a meeting.

Have a safe day,
Dan Henner
