Results of the superintendent search Listening Session for the community

We have results from the Listening Session where the community was invited to meet with DCMO BOCES Superintendent Perry Dewey to talk in greater detail about the superintendent search and its process.  About two dozen--staff, students, and community members--first heard about the Community Survey outcomes, asked questions, and then were invited to participate in next steps.
 
Participants then broke into small groups and were asked by Mr. Dewey to offer opinions in two categories:
 
  • "What We Do Well" at Otselic Valley, and
  • "What Needs Improvement" 

 

Each small group then  recorded their thoughts on large sheets of paper and presented their findings to the group.  Next each participant was given equal numbers of votes with which to note their preferences. One could vote for their own group's findings, or for others. One could put all their votes on one idea in each category, or spread them out. The results:

 

"What We Do Well"

11 votes: Our "whole village" works at raising and encouraging our "children."

10 votes: Good Staff

9 votes: Good Kids

8 votes: Care about all students and all can participate in activities

6 votes: Good Facilities 

5 votes: Good Finances

4 votes: Students come first

3 votes: Teachers are invested in student success in and out of school

1 vote: Strong sense of community

1 vote: Student safety

0 votes: R T I Process

0 votes: Used to take a small town student and have them successful at Ivy League schools

0 votes: Tightknit community

0 votes: Student pride 

 

"What Needs Improvement" 

14 votes: Reinstate Reading Specialists

9 votes: Get back to college readiness

7 votes: Open communication between staff/Board of Education/Administration/Parents without fear of repercussions

5 votes: More A P (Advanced Placement courses), less college (courses)

5 votes: More money toward the arts

4 votes: No flipped classrooms

3 votes: Provide school-wide program consistency

2 votes: Clear vision

2 votes: Work to retain energetic, effective teachers

2 votes: Better food in cafeteria

1 vote: Career opportunities

1 vote: Communication

1 vote: Time for club/class meetings

0 votes: More opportunity for college and career readiness programs

0 votes: Open conversations community-wide

0 votes: Encourage a better work ethic among students. Raise standards while teaching the "whole" student
