Mr. Dana Chapman to serve as Interim Principal for the 2018-2019 school year
We are pleased to introduce Mr. Dana Chapman, Otselic Valley’s interim K-12 Principal for 2018-2019. Mr. Warren Smith left to pursue other interests, so Mr. Chapman was appointed by the Board of Education to remain at OV till the end of the school year. His year-long presence will allow continuity for students and families, and will give O V plenty of time to conduct a search for a new principal.
“Principal Chapman has a lot of experience that makes him a great fit with O V,” said Superintendent Rob Berson. “He is familiar with small schools and communities, and his education career included classroom teaching and 29 years as a school administrator. He was the principal at Hamilton High School before retiring 10 years ago, and before that was Director of the Secondary Education Department at the New York School for the Deaf in Rome. Since retirement he’s served about 15 schools in an interim capacity--the most recent was Stockbridge Valley. We are very pleased to have him join us.”
Mr. Chapman lives in Hamilton with his wife. They have 3 children and now 3 grandkids, he said. When not serving students, teachers, and families, he enjoys riding his bicycle, hunting, the Yankees, and traveling.
He also enjoys working in places like O V, he tells us. “I enjoy small schools because they offer the possibility to get to know the students, teachers, staff, and community on a personal basis. My experience has taught me that small schools have a unique culture, and I enjoy learning about and supporting that culture. I would like all students to be active members within the school community and I support participation in the arts, athletics, F F A, student government, and the large number of other activities associated with our school. I’m pleased to hear how families have supported Morning Program and the Parent Breakfasts too, as well as the wonderful performing arts opportunities available for all grades.
I look forward to getting to know everyone and having a fun and exciting school year!”
