Otselic Valley Central School will soon have a new PreK-12 principal.
Mr. Warren Smith, currently an Assistant Principal at Wellwood Middle School in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, was appointed unanimously at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 11. He is expected to start at Otselic Valley on January 11, 2018.
In a change from a selection process that is often administration-driven, Mr. Smith comes to us through a careful process through which staff chose their preferred candidate.
Mr. Henner invited any interested staff, both instructional and noninstructional, to participate in the decision making. OV administrators first vetted candidates for eligibility, and on the strength of the applications they expanded the interview list from a typical three principals to five.
In a closed interview session that ensured voting independence, participating OV staff then spent 5 hours hearing principal presentations followed by a list of staff questions. At the conclusion of the interviews, staff held a lively, thoughtful group discussion and then voted. Through secret ballot, Mr. Smith was selected by staff majority to be recommended to the Board of Education for appointment. Administration was prepared to cast tie-breaking votes, but that input was not required.
The choice was made difficult by the number of very strong candidates interested in coming to Otselic Valley. Consensus among staff voters, however, is that OV's incoming principal will be a good fit for our school.
We are pleased to introduce you to Mr. Warren Smith:
I am originally from Harpursville, New York where I was very active in academic and athletic pursuits. I went on to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served in the Army both at home and abroad. I returned to central New York and, after gaining my teaching certificate in math from SUNY Cortland, I began teaching math at Chittenango Middle School. I continued my education by completing a Master of Science degree in education (mathematics) at SUNY Cortland and my Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in educational leadership from Syracuse University. I made the step from teaching to becoming a fulltime administrator when I accepted the position as the assistant principal at Wellwood Middle School in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District. While at Wellwood I completed a master’s degree in Strategic Studies at the US Army War College.
I live in Jamesville, New York with my wife and twin boys. Jen, my wife of 25 years, is a professional engineer and works at an engineering firm in Syracuse. She is an avid photographer and enjoys sharing her photos. My boys, Caleb and Sam, are active in sports, Boy Scouts, music, and the arts. They are constantly on the go but still enjoy their time with their cat (Snowy Mittens) and their Xbox.
I am excited that I have been invited to join the team at Otselic Valley. I look forward to meeting the students, staff, and community over the next several weeks. Go Vikings!
Please join us in giving Mr. Smith a warm welcome when he comes to Otselic Valley Central School in January.
