Families, Otselic Valley Central School welcomes you! There are regularly scheduled opportunities for families of elementary aged students (and younger!) to join us.
Unless otherwise indicated, Morning Program happens every Friday morning from 8:30 AM to about 9:00 AM in the MPR, beginning September 21, 2018. In this spirited, weekly gathering, all elementary classes come together for a familiar program of student recognition and fun.
Together we share the Pledge of Allegiance, music, a riddle (and last week’s answer), birthday recognition, and regularly scheduled events like good character trait programming, spirit days, Students of the Month, OV Star Awards, cafeteria awards, and more. Our annual “Muffins for Moms” and “Donuts for Dads” scheduled near Mother’s and Father’s Days are particularly memorable and always delicious.
Families are welcome to watch in a special seating area set aside for visitors.
Every Friday after Morning Program (9 am - 10 am) the youngest in our community and their caregivers are invited to the Library for a story time that’s more than just stories. Mrs. Hammer, our librarian, welcomes babies to age 4 and their parents, guardians, grandparents, or babysitters to join in age-appropriate fun. Depending on the children’s ages, there may be seasonal crafts, play with boxes full of soft hand puppets, a big hello to the biggest Clifford The Big Red Dog, a check on the library’s resident gerbil, a snack, and some of our very best picture books read by Mrs. Hammer.
Research shows that being read to is a predictor of early student success, but there are other good reasons for young children to join us: familiarity with school can help Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students transition more easily to real classes once they’re old enough. And always, we love books and stories and are so happy to share our beautiful school’s resources.
No registration is required -- just come to the Library.

Once each school year (and twice for the 6th grade), parents and guardians are invited to attend their student’s grade Parent Breakfast. Held just after Morning Program, the Parent Breakfast is a chance to learn from teachers in more detail about what Vikings are working on and what to expect in this school year. Two Parent Breakfasts for the 6th grade allow time to both look at this year’s expectations and opportunities, and look ahead to 7th grade and their new teachers. For these events teachers sometimes schedule activities students and parents can do together; sometimes the event allows time to showcase students’ work so far. Every Parent Breakfast event is different.
A light breakfast is served, often including the famous cinnamon rolls prepared by our cafeteria staff. They have our warmest thanks for making such a delicious contribution to these important events.
Attendance at each Parent Breakfast has been robust since these began two years ago--thank you! Family presence communicates to students that learning is important, which can be one of the most mission-critical ideas students take in all year long.
