3/17/2020 Message from Mrs. Richards
Dear OV families,

What a unique time we are in. These are uncharted territories and we recognize how incredibly difficult this situation is for many families.
Our fabulous teams at OV have been working hard to identify meaningful instructional activities for your child to do while he or she is at home for an extended period of time.

Continuity of education will be necessary for our students throughout the impending shutdown. Our goal is to provide you with activities that are aligned with what your children typically do during the school day, recognizing that it won’t be the same as being in the classroom, but everything should be familiar.

We worked to provide enough materials for each child to be engaged in academic learning for approximately 2 hours a day. In preparation, we have asked our teachers to plan and provide online resources for the courses they teach. While we understand there are limitations to the instruction that we can provide for our students during an extended period of time, there are many resources that we can make available for our students to keep them engaged and up to date in their learning.

We certainly recognize that there is a lot going on for our families right now and realize you may not be able to complete all of the activities given in a day. Our intention is to just provide you with resources to keep your children actively learning and prevent regression while they are not coming to school.

If your child experiences any frustrations, please feel free to have them discontinue the activity or, make adjustments to it.
Our cafeteria staff, along with our drivers and aides, initially plan on making at least one run a day to drop off breakfast and lunch, along with student supplies. If you would prefer we not stop at your house, just let them know when they drop off meals. This may change, depending on the situations in our counties.

Mr. Decker is also encouraging students to keep practicing their musical instruments. This includes our 4th grade through 12th grade students.
Finally, please keep your children home during this time, especially if they are sick in any way. This is not a time for play dates, sleepovers and birthday parties. To prevent the spread of this, or any other illnesses, this is a time to stay home as much as possible.

We know this is a stressful time for our students, staff and community, and we appreciate your partnership as we navigate this unknown territory together. Please feel free to reach out to any of our staff members through email if you have any questions or concerns along the way.
Much of the information being provided to us is quickly changing, so we thank you in advance for being patient, understanding and supportive during throughout this process. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Principal's Message, January 2020

I love taking this time to reflect upon the wonders of the New Year.  Watching your children flourish with the guidance of our teachers at Otselic Valley, is truly a blessing.  While visiting classrooms, I witness children who are engaged and excited about learning.  I am very proud of the children and the staff at OV, and I look forward to more great things in 2020!

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to improve communication with our families.  In order to do this, we are asking that you update us on your home, cell and work phone numbers, addresses and any email addresses.  If you have recently had a change in any of these, please be sure to call the school for any updates.  It is also important that your voice mail is set up so that we may leave a message, especially in case of an emergency.  Please be reminded that all official announcements regarding school cancellations and early dismissals or delays are broadcast by radio and television, as well as the School Messenger system.  Another reason to make sure everything is up to date in our system.  Thank you very much for your assistance.

Students will be going outdoors during the winter months.  Coming to school prepared with the right clothes, gloves, hats, snow pants and boots for outdoor weather is very important.  Students will NOT go outdoors if the temperatures outside dip below 20  degrees, this includes the windchill.  Please ensure your child has cold weather gear for recess outdoors each and every day.  If you have additional items your child has outgrown, please feel free to send them to your child’s teacher so we can have extras on hand as needed.

The procedures and daily activities of your child’s classroom should be familiar and comfortable to them by this time in the school year.  If your child is still experiencing anxiety or any type of concerns, please contact your child’s teacher(s).  We can work together to come up with some ideas to help your child feel more successful at school.

Wishing you all the best in the New Year!
