WATER UPDATE from Mr. Berson on November 25, 2018:

Mr. Berson has been advised that the Chenango County Health Department cleared the school district for normal operations provided that "potable" water (which means it's safe to drink) is provided for drinking and food preparation at school.

We have fulfilled that requirement: cases and jugs of water have been delivered for student and staff use. Two cases have been placed in each classroom, and the cafeteria has what they need.

Also, hand washing is permissible from normal lavatory sinks, and all hand sanitizers are full.
Hearty thanks go out to all those who helped get water to school and in place before students and staff return.

We look forward to seeing everyone back at school tomorrow!
UPDATE received by Superintedent Rob Berson on November 20, 2018: "I just received word from the Chenango County Department of Health that the school district can expect to have a "Do not drink order" on Monday, November 26 changing to a "Boil water order" by the mid-end of the week.  The school district will make provisions for bottled water for students and staff. In addition, the school district will make provisions for food service: either single use products or additional water for rinsing dishes, etc."  NOTE: Drinking fountains have been turned off to prevent accidental water consumption.

The following DO NOT DRINK WATER order has been received by the Otselic Valley Central School District. The district will arrange to have potable water available for staff next week. In the event the order is not lifted by the time school resumes after Thanksgiving break, arrangements will be made for students and staff to have access to potable water.

The Chenango County Health Department has issued a DO NOT DRINK WATER ORDER for the South Otselic Water District effective November 16, 2018. This order is due to the failure of the well pump which supplies the district. Steps have been taken to correct the failure. It is estimated that the do not drink order wil be in effect for 7-10 days.
An emergency source will be supplying the water district until the condition is resolved.  As a result the Chenango County Health Department is warning residents to NOT USE THE WATER FOR COOKING, DRINKING, OR BRUSHING YOUR TEETH. Bottled water will be available at the South Otselic Fire Stations and NYS Certified bottled water can be purchased for consumption.
This advisory is in effect until the condition is resolved and sampling indicates the water to be within New York State Health Department guidelines. Notice will be given when the issues has been corrected and the do not drink water order has been lifted.
For more information, residents may contact the Environmental Division of the Chenango County Health Department at 607-337-1673 or the Otselic Town Clerk at 315-653-7201.
