UPDATES for Wednesday, March 25

In our new online, offsite, still-connected time of social distancing, we hope it’s helpful to have a lot of info rounded up in one place each day. Previous updates are still relevant so please check them all.

SOME PARENT EMAILS ARE BOUNCING when teachers include them in an email. Perhaps some email filters are set to disallow ‘bulk’ email messages. Please set your filter options to ALWAYS ALLOW from domain ovcs.org. We don’t want you missing out on any important information!

LUNCH WITH THE PRINCIPAL has started  -- a “virtual” lunch, that is. Beginning today, Mrs.  Richards has started hosting a half-hour lunch you can access through a link on your device. Today she was joined by students in PreK through 2nd  grade, tomorrow (3/26) it’s open to students in 3rd - 6th grade, and on Friday (3/27) it’s open to students in 7th -12th grade. A link will be sent to students and parents the night before their lunch date. Look for a new schedule next week too.

DID YOU KNOW that Ms. Moisan’s Otselic Valley CSD Guidance Office Facebook page is for students and families of all ages? Check it often for fun apps and exercises that are useful for all ages. You will find support there, and tools for navigating this unusual time. Personally, we love  “Bumblebee Breathing.”

NOW OPEN: the Big Library Read! This is a global virtual book club providing FREE digital access to good books through school libraries.  At OV, students can read this year’s book through the Sora app, available through the OV Library Online Library Catalog: https://soraapp.com/welcome/login/202777  . In keeping with National Autism Awareness Month, the book we're reading is Funny, You Don't Look Autistic by Michael McCreary, a 20-something stand-up comedian. This book will be available free to students now through April 13. Need help getting access? Contact Mrs. Hammer: [email protected]

BECAUSE READING IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA, Ms. Smith has collected some ebook resources. Thank you!

Audible: While school is on pause kids can listen to a selection of audio books for free by clicking here:  https://stories.audible.com/start-listen.  You do not need to create an account. They have a selection for all levels of students including Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, Call of the Wild, and more modern titles. They also have titles in multiple languages for bi-lingual households and for students practicing their Spanish.

Apple Books: Anyone who has an Apple product can search "free" in the books app and lots of free titles come up. There are Sesame Street classics including my favorite, The Monster at the End of this Book. In this app there are digital as well as audio books. (Parental guidance is suggested as there were adult titles mixed in with children's titles.)

Overdrive: You can access e-books and audiobooks from the NYS library system using the Overdrive app. All you need is a library card. You will need to put in the barcode numbers on your card and a pin. If you do not already know the pin from your library you can request it. I don't know how long it may take them to get back to you given that they are closed, but it's worth trying as there are a lot of great resources there. If you do not have a card follow this link and apply for a card online to gain access. https://www.nypl.org/books-music-movies/ebookcentral/simplye

FOOD DELIVERY is available daily (Monday-Friday) for breakfasts and lunches, as well as weekly Backpack Program packages, for those who request it. Please note that this delivery schedule may change as we manage staff needs, and we'll keep you posted on that.

  • Please leave a box, tote, or cooler at the end of your driveway where we can put the food. This keeps the delivery safe, and helps staff practice social distancing as required to prevent spread of the coronavirus/COVID-19.
  • Students in town who normally walk to school will also continue to get deliveries.
  • Please keep your pets contained when deliveries are coming around.
  • Thanks for your patience as we get the right materials to the students for which they are intended.
  • The buses leave around 9 am daily so their drop off times will become familiar.
  • Email Mrs. Burpee at [email protected] to make changes, or to be added to the daily food delivery list. Email Mrs. Morse at [email protected] to be added to the weekly Backpack Program delivery as well.

ANYONE AGE 18 AND YOUNGER WHO IS RESIDING WITH A FAMILY HAVING AT LEAST ONE CHILD ENROLLED IN OUR DISTRICT can get food through TWO drive-up/walk-up sites, either the South Otselic or Georgetown schools, from 9 am to 10:30 am, Monday-Friday.

IF YOUR STUDENT HASN’T YET CONNECTED with teachers, please encourage them to do so today. We need to know who is able to access school content and who is having difficulty. Our teachers are reaching out, but parents/guardians are also encouraged to contact us so we can get you sorted. Email Mrs. Richards, our Principal, if you need help or have questions: [email protected]
