South Otselic Grange gifts third graders with personal dictionaries

Another class of Otselic Valley’s third graders are proud owners of their own personal dictionaries thanks to the South Otselic Grange #1398. Marjorie Davis and Mary Comfort recently visited Ms. Lawrence’s classroom to present each student with a copy of The Best Dictionary for Students, as they have annually for years.

After each student’s name was called, they stepped up to receive the dictionary intended specifically for them. These aren’t ordinary dictionaries, or course. In addition to listing over 32,000 words, the bright yellow, soft-bound books include information about weights and measures, Roman numerals, the periodic table of elements, multiplication tables, a map of the United States, and more.

These dictionaries are among those distributed by community organizations nationwide in partnership with The Dictionary Project, a nonprofit organization whose intent is to put a free dictionary in the hands of every third grader in the country.

“The goal of this program,” according to The Dictionary Project website, “is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade” (

Students in the Otselic Valley Central School are now part of the 31 million children across the country who have received these books since 1995 through community donations.

Most importantly, our Vikings are well on their way to fulfilling an Immediate Priority of the Otselic Valley Strategic Plan: “Ensure that all students in Pre-K through 12th grade are reading or above grade level.”

Many thanks are extended to the South Otselic Grange, and specifically Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Comfort, for their ongoing support of student literacy and Otselic Valley Central School.
