We are pleased to welcome Deputy Kent Smith, this year’s School Resource Officer, to Otselic Valley Central School.
Deputy Smith is a sworn police officer with over 30 years' experience in law enforcement including boating/navigation patrol and snow mobile enforcement in Chenango County, and he most recently served as a Sergeant in the New York State Courts.
As SRO his primary role will be to maintain a safe, secure school environment while working together with administration. He will also be available to provide relevant law-related education and public safety presentations as needed. If students have law enforcement career questions, he can field those too.
“I believe the SRO is a very important position,” Deputy Smith told us recently, “because on-site security helps students and staff feel safe in their school environment. Hopefully it also allows students to see peace officers in a positive way.”
As SRO he may contribute to the district safety plan, patrol our buildings and grounds, and provide advanced safety functions as needed. Deputy Smith can also make arrests although we hope and trust that will never be needed.
Deputy Smith’s interest in the safety and well-being of the Otselic Valley community has another layer: he has family ties to students in our school.
The district is grateful to the Chenango County Sheriffs Office for collaboratively supporting this valuable program.
Please join us in extending a Viking welcome to Deputy Smith. We are delighted that he is part of the extended Otselic Valley community.
